I have had the 5 ton splitter for 2 seasons of use now and split logs from3" to 24" diam with no problems. It came on sale for about $200 and after the 1st season I bought the stand for it which made it less stressful on the back to use. It is a well built and rugged design piece of equipment that should last for years to come. Tip:- If you wait for the logs to get really cold (minus 10 - 40 degrees) they will slit with ease. Great bang for your buck.

Split about three cords with it so far,oak maple, ash, hickory, etc, etc. Only four pieces that it wouldn't split and they were all knotty crotch pieces. It seems to be well built with very little plastic. Two handed operation was a pain at first but now I don't even notice it.I built a stand for it to make it easier on my back.I got it at the sale price of 240 bucks and it is worth every penny. As usual great service from Princess,I ordered it online after 7 o'clock on Monday night and Purolater had it in my driveway by 10 am Thursday. As far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong.

I purchased this item on Thursday and used on Sept long weekend, we split at least 5 cords of wood. this unit split it all. from 6" to 16" diameter wood. I think there was only 2 pieces we couldn't do because it was just to knotty.. But simply an excellent unit.. I was a little Leary on the stand that you can buy separately, but it worked great as well. I recommend this 100% that was the best money I have ever spent at princess auto.

works great and well built. Just recieved this week and already split two cords of wood with no problem at all. Made a stand so a little easier to use rather than having to bend over. The only thing would change is to make the splitter part handle a little longer to make it easier to use. Solved that by adding a small piece of pipe over it. Great value for the money and would recommend to anyone wanting a splitter for home firewood.

No manual info covering distance adjustment options for the fist and for the fist return locking piece, but a you tube video put the pieces together for this first time log splitter user. Also purchased the stand and had little problem with the assembly and tie in other than a 2 person job at stages. Splitter made easy work of 1 yr old birch and the stand saved my back. Two handed operation become second nature very quickly. Great product!

Split a fairly large quantity of hard maple and ash firewood with this unit, very happy with it. Will handle quite a large block, just as long as you remember to "slab" the large ones a bit instead of just heading into them dead center. For home use, would recommend this to anyone. I got the optional stand, was a good idea and would strongly recommend getting one, easier to use and move around.

We have been using log splitters for decades, so have been through a few. We like this one. Size is good. It is easy to fit up with a wheeled 2X4 home built stand. The direct piston action is very sensible and the ability to adjust the stroke distance is genius. We acknowledge that safety is paramount when working with this much muscle, but as experienced workers, we would have been happier if there was a choice between one or two handed operation. With the 'two handed safety feature', one is constantly turning the motor on and off for each split. With our preferred 'one hand operation' the motor runs continuously (good at -27 C) and with one hand holding the piston lever, the other hand is free to reach over and help balance those big ugly pieces until the wedge starts its bite. That's only our preferrence...otherwise we have absolutely no complaints about this splitter. Great deal for the cost, and Princess Auto customer service is gold plated.

I was quite hesitant of buying this as I did not know anyone with experience of the product. Waited for it to go on sale and bought it. Figured I could take advantage of Princess Auto's return policy if it didn't hold up. It has been an excellent investment! Split anything I threw at it! Put seasoned 22" diameter logs; just took a couple of extra passes. Have to check the oil occasionally and always open the bleeder for use. I painted 'open in use' in red on top with arrows to remind me. Top buy! Wait for sale.

We have the log splitter by the stove and can split the logs as we need to fit them in the fire. I love that we can use the machine in our house and don't have to spend hours outside splitting the wood all at once with the gas powered motor.

I purchased this log splitter last week and WOW! It is perfect for the type of job I have to take care of when it comes to log solitting. Very powwerful for an electric splitter. I would recommend it to anyone. I also got the stanf for it and this was an excellent decision.

Love it! Was the best $240 I spent. On my 3rd cord of wood so far. Birch, Maple, Spruce, and Fir, split every one including the notty ones, and I had some pretty big spruce junks! Would have liked the cutting wedge to be a little higher though as the bigger junks tend to rise up while splitting.

I was skeptical buying an electric wood splitter but after watching the unit on youtube and the reviews here I took the plunge and am very happy with the results. I Split 3 cords of hardwood (Oak & Maple) with this unit, the largest being 14 inches in diameter without any issues. It seems really well made and it has an adjustable ram so you can adjust for different lengths of wood, speeding up the process. It powered through the largest pieces easily and only once did it stall but once reset, split the log. It's very easy to use. It would be nice if the stand was included but for the price I won't complain. I set it up on a sturdy folding table and it was at the perfect height for splitting. I thought it would be slow but very quickly that split pile grew. I was working alone but with two people it would go a lot quicker. I have another 3 cords comming of bigger wood but I do not think that it will have any issues. The only con so far is the fact that the wheels are so low to the ground that it catches things as you pull it along.

Overall pretty good splitter for this money . I have it for 2 years and it helps me to proceed 7 full cords for my fireplace. For the knotty wood you will need to try several times from different places until log will be done but it will save your back any way . Plastic wheels are cheap and you will brake them pretty fast but they are useless because you will have almost no flat surface outdoor . Check/add/change the hydraulic oil often because you will loose some amount each and every time from the bleed screw . Try to put the splitter on some high place or buy the stand for that - operating it on the ground will make your work less comfortable and your back will tell you that soon .

I just bought and used it. Not listed in the parts in the box is a metal rectangular piece, 1 corner bent 30 degrees and the other side has a 90 degree What is this item for? (about 4" long)

PA_Support_KC

December 23, 2014

A

It is a cylinder stop for shorter logs. It holds the pusher back from complete retraction to reduce the cycle time.

Q

the literature states a 12 second cycle time, which is about half the time of all comparable electric splitters. Does the piston really move twice as fast? It doesn't appear to in the video. How is the cycle time measured? Is it measured using the full 20.5 inch cycle? Is this a one-stage or two-stage?

PA_Support_KC

December 23, 2014

A

The cycle time is measured from full retraction to full extension back to full retraction. The retraction is not powered and resets fairly quickly. 15 to 20 seconds would be a little more realistic. It is a single stage pump with a single acting cylinder.

Thank you for your question. Princess Auto has many different deal types. Some are "in store" only deal, some are "web only" deals, some are "one day" only deals and more.
